It is revealed that Gatsby did what is usually not possible, and created himself exactly how he wanted to be. He changed his name when he became an apprentice to the very rich Dan Cody, and got his education from him. While Gatsby is sort of a fraud, he isn't as big of a fraud as the rumors make him out to be. Gatsby is the type of person who sets a goal, and doesn't stop until he reaches the goal. At this point in his life, his goal was to obtain wealth, and he did it. This determination he has followed him after he met Daisy, and now he is determined to make everything go back to normal. In this chapter we also see a meeting between Tom and Gatsby, which is a strained occurrence. Tom is obviously very suspicious of Gatsby. Daisy having a relationship with Gatsby is obviously a very big blow to his ego, which is something that the readers know is very important to Tom. Tom comments on Gatsby's social status as well, showing that even among the rich there are social distinctions.
